Recently, in Oklahoma, 43 year old Clayton Lockett underwent a botched process for Capitol punishment. Although, according to the associated press, Governor Mary Fallin agrees that execution is the appropriate punishment for the most horrendous crimes, executions have been stopped until new protocol and procedure has been implemented. This unfortunate incident has brought back to light the issues behind the death penalty. Problems with current methods have become apparent and secondary methods do not offer a solution. Since the start of the abolitionist movement in the early 1700s, a movement toward tighter death penalty laws taken form. In present the day United States, 16 states have outlawed capitol punishment and the other states have undergone a process by which the method attempts to be more humane. The chance of innocence, no matter how small, should outweigh that of guilt. Capital Punishment should be banned from practice and ruled unconstitutional because the process exempli fies unjust and degrading methods of punishment upon the offender. Before an execution can occur, a series of protocol can drag the difficult process on for long periods of time and be harmful to the convicted. According to â€Å"The Case Against the Death Penalty†, the average inmate waits twelve years after the conclusion of the trail for the execution. This time can be mentally strenuous and result in physiological illness known as Death Row Syndrome.
